I create nature-inspired abstract textile collages full of the colors, textures and shapes we see in nature to remind us how good we feel spending time outdoors.
Many people love the beauty of nature. Some people like photography. Some like realistic paintings. Some like abstract art. I make abstract textile collages for those people to imagine the feeling of the waves on the lake , summer blooms on the prairie or watching the clouds in the sky to remind us how good we feel being in those places.
How do I do it?
First, I decide on a nature theme or place for inspiration. Past art series include watching clouds, fall forests, Lake Michigan shorelines. Then I create the materials for the artwork by deconstructing old shirts, jeans, or sheets. Next, I paint the fabric pieces with the colors I see in nature. I cut up the fabric pieces and sew them back together.
Why do I do this? What is my story?
I want to help us focus on the good in our lives to help us get through the tough times. One way is to surround ourselves with nature-inspired art to remind us how good we feel in our favorite places in nature.
For me, it always comes down to the peace and beauty of nature. I use those good memories to create art based on my favorite places in nature.
I started as a quilter and felt I needed more texture and color to be able to bring forth the ideas in my head. I learned a technique for painting on deconstructed fabric that allows me to explore the depth of colors I see in nature. As a quilter, a big part of the gig is having enough fabric stash to have all the colors you might need. Now I use a more sustainable method with using fabric from discarded clothes and my color possibilities are unlimited with paints I can blend to make any color I want.
Currently, I sell my nature-inspired abstract textile collages through Brushwood Nature Center Art Markets two times a year, Spring and Winter, online and in person.
In the future, I will be offering art for sale on my Instagram account. To see what I am up to, follow me on Instagram @kathleenwarrenstudio
